  1. Plug in the monitor.
  2. Run dmesg|grep "udlfb: DisplayLink USB device". You should see a line like this: <verbatim> udlfb: DisplayLink USB device /dev/fb1 attached. 1366x768 resolution. Using 4104K framebuffer memory </verbatim>
  3. The UNIX device /dev/fb1 is the device to which the monitor is attached (it might be something different for you).
  4. Add this to the bottom of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
    ################ DisplayLink ###################
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "DisplayLinkDevice"
    Driver "fbdev"
BusID "USB" # needed to use multiple DisplayLink devices
Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb1" # change to whatever device you want to use
    # Option "rotate" "CCW" # uncomment for rotation
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DisplayLinkMonitor"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "DisplayLinkScreen"
    Device "DisplayLinkDevice"
    Monitor "DisplayLinkMonitor"
    DefaultDepth 16
    EndSection

  5. Edit the ServerLayout section of xorg.conf to contain this:
        Screen "DisplayLinkScreen"
        Option "Xinerama" "on"

  6. Remove the Default Screen section
